CONCEPT

As Samil-ro Changgo Theatre Consecration Service was highly praised by the public, it was invited to be performed at Namsan Arts Center, a historical significant site and public theatre in Korea. As much as the production itself transitioned from a small to large theatre and from a low to sizable budget, necessary adjustments were made to the format of the play - from a small sermon to a major service. The focal emotions involved also changed, as the production went from a calm and reverent atmosphere to a more passionate, heated display of emotions. At the Namsan Arts Center, itself born at the heart of Korea's most turbulent contemporary history, the historical dialogue of Christianity in Korea and modern Queer discourse came to collide on stage. In the format of a church, hot questions were thrown about the rituality of the production, and the nature of Christianity itself.

The appearance of the Namsan Arts Center resembles that of a revered chapel. With consideration that the stage resembled certain qualities of the main character, much effort went into preserving the uniqueness of the site itself rather than installing artificial set elements. The characteristics of the building, with circular audience seats and balconies installed, were adequately utilized to resemble a church. Interestingly, the Namsan Arts Center was initially built in tribute to the amphitheatre, a traditional, circular Greek theatre. In this performance, actors and chorus would transition between choirs and dancers like Greek tragedy.
