CONCEPT

Samil-ro Changgo Theatre Consecration Service brings a theatricalized religious worship service to theatre. The play shows that worship service as a theatrical piece with a possibility of audience participation, a ritual performance formed over a long period of time. However, church worship service now is left only with its form, having lost its original purpose and characteristics. We argue that the reason Christianity has been shunned by many people in Korea and regressed, unable to find any connectionᅠwith society is because worship services have been long dead. Therefore, the play attempts to restore the original characteristic of ritual and performance that has been dormant for a long period of time.

The play imagines the possibility of causing an event like the resurrection of the dead(Jesus) by placing queers, the ones who have been cast out by Christianity, as the chief priests to revive the rituality and theatricality that have been dormant in the long-dead worship service. By doing that, the play hopes to bring back the stolen worship service, which means to restore its rightful time, space, and history. Because valued ideas such as love, community, and faith have been monopolized by the mainstream Christianity, those who have been marginalized and cast aside were forced to find their own symbols and languages. And the ones who seized the worship service as their own used the cross and the idea of love to oppress the minorities. The aim of the play is to claim them back by sharing and contemplating on the hatred and fear against the queer in the present Korean society, and the crisis and division that Christianity faces now as well as the public nature of theatre and performance.
